Sgt Bradley Thomas Homecoming Parade

Some of you may remember the benefit that I helped with many years ago for a local Jones Creek soldier who was injured when a roadside bomb exploded injuring Sgt Bradley Thomss from Jones Creek as well as another occupant of the vehicle that he was in. A couple other occupants in the vehicle were not do lucky as they lost their lives. This occured back in January of 2008. Bradley has been hospitalized ever since - until today. Over 4 1/2 years after sustaining his injuries today he finally was able to come back to Brazoria County and Jones Creek where he grew up. His head injury was one of the mist severe in military history that someone has actually ever survived. During the time of his absence their has been a home built for him and his family to be able to accomodate him with his special medical needs that will be required to live put his years back in his home town with his family and friends.

I used to live next door to The Thomas Family many years ago. I have considered his father Rocky a friend for many years. His mother Veronica has been by her son's side for almost the entiriety of his past 4 plus years of rehabilitation. As they were growing up Bradley and his younger brother Corey were always the most polite and well mannered young men ghat you would ever want to meet. It was always yes sir and no sir as their responses with every conversation we have ever had. Respect that was taught them by their parents. Something of which I have always admired about the Thomas boys. Not long after Bradley's graduation his best friend Cody Ford enlisted in the military. No long after he finished boot camp, he was shipped over to Iraq. Weeks after he arrived in Iraq he was killed by an IED. Not long after the loss of one of his best friends in this manner, Bradley enlisted in the services to go over and take Cody's place. After his completion on boot camp he was shipped over to Iraq. He hadn't been there but around a month whenever he sustained his dibilitating injuries. Aside from losing his best friend there, he himself had now sustained injuries that would change his life forever. He is and will be dependant upon an upright wheelchair to be able to be in an upright position. He will be dependant upon his parents and family for now. He is able to communicate with them through some basic sign language and jestures.

Today being his homecoming it was very heartwarming to see the outcry of support as the roadways lining his pathway to his new home to Jones Creek were packed along the entire route with friends, family and community members out in force to show Sgt. Bradley Thomas the welcome home that he so overwhelmingly deserved. He was escorted by several motorcycle organizations , The Patriot Guard and the Brazoria County Calvary as well as about every police & fire departments from all of our local municipalities coupled with his family and friends. I myself lined the parade route in Jones Creek on Stephen F Austin Blvd near the location of his new residence.

Bradley we will be forever endebted to you and your family for your service to our great country. God Bless America & God Bless The Thomas Family !

Thanks for the post updating us on a true American Hero Kevin. I remember when Cody Ford was killed, I had worked with his dad Phillip. Jones Creek has certainly been hit hard with Iraq casualties. Some of our finest young men.

Phillip and Bradley's Father Rocky are good friends also.

Here is sn article from fox news :

Tiny town musters big support for returning hero
Sep 18, 2012 5:14 p.m.

Four years is a long time to be away, but Bradley Thomas has finally come home.

The people in Brazoria County haven't forgotten Brad or Sgt. Thomas, if you prefer. They wanted to show him they still care and appreciate his sacrifice.

Hundreds turned up to welcome him back at the Texas Gulf Coast Regional Airport near Angleton. His air ambulance touched down to cheers and tears, and then taxied up under an archway formed by water from fire hoses. He was loaded onto an ambulance and escorted home by police, firefighters, and the motorcycle riders of the Brazoria County Cavalry.

"There's nobody who does a batter job of serving the community than the people who live there," BCC founder Tracy Read said. "That's just a fact."

All along the route, hundred, maybe thousands of well-wishers lined the route. Hanna Pavalu and Jamie Cambell draped a flag across the back of their SUV stopped along the highway.

"Both of my children are enlisted and about to go off to the Navy, so this hits close to me," Cambell said.

"We just wanted to show our support and love, show the county has a great spirit of hometown and heroes," Pavalu added.

The real show came when the procession entered tiny Jones Creek. Elementary school students held signs, waved and cheered. The high school marching band played. Flags lined the entire route to Brad's home.

It's a home he's never seen before. In 2008, an IED ended Thomas's war just a month into his deployment. He is in a semi-conscious, non-communicative state thanks to a traumatic brain injury and has undergone years of intensive therapy in far away places.

His family wanted him home. HelpingAHero.org built him a new one from the ground up and designed it to meet their needs.

Danny McClung, the builder, learned a lot about this town when he asked the clerk about what they needed for the permit.

"She started crying and asked, 'Is that the Thomas house? You don't need a permit; just build it'!"

This outpouring of support may come as a surprise to some, but not to the people of Jones Creek and certainly not Brad's father, Rocky.

"It's good to have everybody home," Rocky said. "It's good to be surrounded by red-blooded Americans: the county, the police, the firefighters, all our friends. We're blessed."

By the tears welling up in his eyes, you could tell he really meant it.
